The History of Vimmerby Camping
Here you can read about the history of Vimmerby Camping, from the 1940s to the present day, and how the site has evolved over the years.
It is a historic site, with the first campers visiting Vimmerby Camping sometime in the 1940s.
The photo is dated 1951 and was probably taken just behind the Alphyddan building.
At that time, our hostel, Alphyddan, was the heart of the site, as it served as the reception, bakery, and café.
Out in the lake, there was a large diving tower and a classic dance pavilion – with a touch of the Riviera, as it extended out over the lake.
Apart from the hostel, the beautifully carved entrance gates are also still preserved from that time.
The dance pavilion disappeared in the early 1980s and has since made way for, among other things, the beautiful floating lakeside sauna that now sits in its place.
The diving tower, which was actually built by the military as part of an exercise, remained until the late 1980s, when there was no longer anyone responsible for its upkeep and maintenance.
If you delve into the archive photos, it quickly becomes clear that the area around Nossen’s shore has been a place of joy for generation after generation.
The Development of Nossenbadet Camping
A lot has changed since the first tents were pitched on the grassy fields, which at the time were owned by Vimmerby Municipality and leased to private operators.
In 2000, Nossenbadets Camping became Vimmerby Camping, Nossenbadet, when Lasse “NossenBossen” Johansson purchased the site from the municipality.
A major period of development began, with new buildings being added one after another as the need for new facilities grew.
Lasse ran the site successfully for 19 years.
In 2019, the site was purchased by Elisabeth & Hampus, who work tirelessly and with great enthusiasm to develop the site while preserving its heritage.
The site is beautifully situated in nature, which is carefully preserved and maintained in collaboration with the other businesses in the area.
Year-by-year development under the leadership of Team WETHS:
2019
-A new recycling station.
-Renovation of the lakeside sauna, including a new roof and new flotation pontoons.
-Launch of a new website.
2020
-Renovation of the mini-golf course with artificial turf.
-A new ice cream kiosk.
-Renovation of the upper service house, including new toilets, showers and kitchen.
-Remodeling of the reception area.
-Remodeling of the restaurant dining area.
2021
-A new 1,250 m² dog park in a hilly setting.
-The unmanned 24Food NossenLivs grocery store opens.
-A new dog shower with a toilet and regular shower.
-New roofs on all Smålandsstugor.
2022
– Conversion of the restaurant kitchen into a pizzeria.
– Construction of the new large playground.
– Renovation of the lower service house.
2023
-Remodeling of the restaurant kitchen to accommodate increased capacity.
-Installation of solar panels across the entire site.
-Leveling of camping pitches 55–57 and 90–97, along with three new camping pitches and an improved tent area.
-New accommodation options with glamping tents.
-New paper-free solutions in all toilets and service houses for a more climate-friendly operation.
2024
-Outdoor dishwashing stations are built at Service Houses 1 & 2.
-Easter as a Vimmerby experience begins to take shape.
-The beach is added to the restaurant veranda.
-Vimmerby Camping wins Vimmerby’s Hospitality Award.
-The diving tower is installed in the lake.
-A hot tub is installed next to the lakeside sauna.
-Vimmerby Camping is named Young Business of the Year in Vimmerby Municipality and Kalmar County, qualifying for the national final.
-Vimmerby Camping is included in Camping.info’s “Top 1001 Campsites in Europe.”
-New kitchens are installed in Holiday Apartments 1–11.
2025
-Chloe Cottage is built, offering four premium accommodations in the best location.
-Vimmerby Camping wins the “Campers’ Choice” award for Best Hospitality.
-The Småland Cottage is completely renovated.
-The Ellen & Härbre cottages are renovated.
-Three new pedal boats take to the lake.
-A stage is built on the restaurant veranda.
2026
-The “Arizona” and “Riverdale” holiday caravans move onto the campsite.
-Service House 4 officially opens.
-Service House 2 is completely renovated and expanded with more toilets and showers.
-We switch our digital booking system to CampingOnline.
-TallyWeb is introduced.
-New kitchens are installed in Holiday Apartments 21–24.
-Trollstigen opens for everyone to explore.
-The outdoor gym right by the lakeshore opens.
-The ice cream kiosk is remodeled, and scooped ice cream is added to the selection.
-The glamping area is refreshed and given a new location.
