On a sunny summer day at Vimmerby Camping, we decide to rent a canoe. The day has been lovely, and now, as evening slowly sets in, it’s a warm August evening. The first comment gives us away immediately – we are beginners. “Ah, this is a canoe, not a kayak,” someone says with a laugh.
We have paddles and life jackets with us, each with a bottle of water. We’re wearing our swimwear, not because we plan to swim, but because we know you don’t just jump into the water from a canoe. And the warmth makes it feel like the best choice to keep us cool.
It feels a bit nervous stepping into the canoe from the dock; it wobbles slightly beneath us. But as soon as we find our balance and sit with our weight centered, it becomes much more stable. The nervousness fades, and we immediately feel braver. We paddle out from the shore, slowly and carefully, heading toward the mirror-like Nossen Lake. The water is calm, and the lake offers a really nice trip. We pass summer cottages along the shore and glide respectfully past them. We paddle in sync, but sometimes there are a few crooked strokes here and there. But what does it matter? It’s not a race! Sometimes we paddle a bit harder and feel the canoe pick up speed.
After a while, we reach the southern coves, surrounded by forests, meadows, and a small private boathouse with a dock. We follow the eastern shore back toward the campsite, and here and there we see tents and caravans between the trees as we pass the last summer cottages. It was a lovely route around the lake, and in less than an hour, we were back – a good trip for us beginners. Sometimes we let the water carry us forward, sometimes we grabbed the paddles and fought a bit to move forward.
As the sun begins to set, we turn back toward the campsite and feel satisfied with today’s trip. We start to long for a delicious dinner at the restaurant as a reward for our first canoe outing. And we know it won’t be the last time – we will definitely go out again! The same thing we say about the food later that evening – definitely something to look forward to!
